Common signs of activity

gnaw marks on a plastic pipe
two rat droppings on top of loft insulation
rat burrow at the edge of a building
a drain line inside an inspection chamber, with a metal non return valve in to stop rats getting past

Rats are experts at staying hidden, but they always leave clues. Identifying these signs early can help confirm their activity:

  • Live Sightings: Spotting rats during the day suggests a large population or disturbance.

  • Burrows: 6–9 cm holes near sheds, decking, or dense vegetation often indicate nesting.

  • Gnawing Marks: Chew marks on wood, plastics, pipes, or cables are common.

  • Droppings: Dark, spindle-shaped droppings (10–20 mm) found along walls or travel routes.

  • Noises & Smells: Scratching in lofts/walls and a strong musky odour.

Our Approach

At Old Bill’s Pest Control, we carry out a full survey to identify entry points and harbourage areas. Treatments usually involve a combination of approved rodenticides and non-toxic monitoring baits, applied safely and in compliance with CRRU guidelines. Every visit includes a full report, site plan, and clear recommendations for proofing. Our goal is not just to stop activity, but to help you prevent it coming back.

How quickly will rat activity stop?

Results vary, but most treatments show significant improvement within days to a few weeks.

Are rat treatments safe for pets and children?

Yes. We use approved methods and ensure treatments are applied safely with full documentation.

Why do I have rats on my property?

Rats are attracted to food, water, and shelter. Common entry points include gaps in walls, drains, or poorly sealed doors.
